ANTLER QUALITY

DOMAIN CERVUS is committed to the quality and aesthetic appeal of the antlers it offers, and this page explains why the company has chosen to source its deer antlers exclusively from wild animals, based on the three key factors that determine antler quality.

LIFESTYLE

Wild animals lead an athletic lifestyle that promotes better health, resulting in higher-quality antlers.

GENETICS

The aesthetic appeal of antlers can also be influenced by the genetics of wild individuals, thanks to natural selection. Each individual’s genetics determines their predisposition for antler quality. Although farmed animals may result from selective breeding and thus have more developed antlers than wild individuals, they still do not align with the DOMAIN CERVUS philosophy of “Powerful Wild Design”: artificial selective breeding does not provide all the conditions necessary for optimal aesthetic antler quality.

DIET

Even though wild animals have a balanced and healthy diet, their food intake may sometimes be insufficient to produce high-quality antlers. In fact, while farmed animals are often better fed in terms of quantity, they may sometimes suffer from nutritional deficiencies in certain elements not found in commercial feed. Although some wild individuals may have antlers that are not of the highest quality due to insufficient food, there is also a chance that other wild individuals have been better nourished.

By extension, the ideal scenario is that some wild individuals have been better nourished and possess antlers of very high quality, combining the benefits of their wild lifestyle, their genetics, and their diet.

This is why, in addition to its ethical standards, DOMAIN CERVUS has chosen to prioritize its ability to source high-quality wild deer antlers.

(FUTURE PROJECT)

To enhance our customers’ shopping experience, DOMAIN CERVUS aims to establish its own criteria to incorporate an assessment of the quality of deer antlers into the products we offer. This would be a significant advantage for certified products, as it would help justify certain price differences.

The assessment of antler quality—which is closely linked to the health and well-being of wild animals—is fully in line with our philosophy. We are convinced that a healthy animal best expresses its genetic potential.

A scientific and holistic approach:

To bring this project to fruition, DOMAIN CERVUS is gradually adopting an approach derived from animal osteopathy, specializing in the functional morphology of deer.

Animal osteopathy involves working on the musculoskeletal system to restore homeostasis. Functional morphology refers to the study of an organism’s morphological characteristics and their impact on its performance and adaptation to its environment. This includes, among other things, how biological functions (health, metabolism) and mechanical stresses (movement, posture) shape and modulate the form of living structures.

Since biomechanics teaches us that “form follows function,” functional morphology helps us understand how mechanical stresses (locomotion, combat, head posture) influence the adaptation of antler bone growth.

This biomechanical analysis helps decipher the animal’s history: for example, how a specific curvature of the antlers may reflect postural compensation or a slight lameness.

Animal osteopathy, combined with functional morphology, allows us to assess the health of a deer, whether through clinical observation of its body in motion or through meticulous analysis of its antlers.

DOMAIN CERVUS offers products that meet dual standards—both ethical and scientific. We prioritize a holistic approach to animal health, the ultimate guarantee of the antlers’ quality and authenticity.

FACTORS DETERMINING THE QUALITY OF DEER ANTLER

1) MINERALIZATION AND BONE STRUCTURE

The bone structure, combined with bone density (mineralization rate), is important for resistance to fractures. This is why dense antlers are more valuable than those with lower density.

2) AESTHETIC QUALITY OF DEER ANTLERS

- Size: Large and thick (wide) antlers are more highly valued.

- Shape: The spacing between the two antlers must be taken into account. The overall shape of the antlers, as well as that of each part (crown, shape of the points*), and the direction of the points* determine aesthetic quality.

- Symmetry: Asymmetries are common in deer antlers. A symmetrical pair of deer antlers is highly valued.

- Weight and volume;

- Texture: A rich texture is a good indicator. Also, some antlers may have a beaded texture.

* Points: Branches of the antlers.

Visually impressive antlers or those with atypical shapes (morphological rarity) can increase the value.

3) COLOR

There are color variations from one individual to another, depending on the type of tree that stained the antler.

4) QUALITY OF THE ANTLERS

When antlers remain in the wild for a long time, they deteriorate due to biological and environmental factors.

- Consumption by other animal species: Other animals may consume antlers for their calcium content. Parts of the antlers disappear, and tooth marks become visible.

- Climate: Rain and sunlight cause the antler to lose its elasticity. Rain discolors and then erodes the antler. Cracks may appear.

- Mold and fungi: Fungi eventually grow on the eroded antler.
